Modern technique, improvisation, and composition are taught in the style of modern dance pioneer Mary Wigman. Students must take a weekly ballet class in addition to modern. The beginning levels focus on the technique, style, and history of the modern dance pioneers. The higher levels explore relaese technique, contact improvisation, post modern movement, and composition. Modern level 5 students choreograph and produce their own dances, which comprise a concert performed at the Blair School of Music’s Ingram Hall each Spring. Additionally, they learn about lighting and costume design, and choreograph dancers from modern levels 2-4.
